“Científicos estudiando almejas islandeses dicen en un nuevo informe que los isótopos de oxígeno en las almejas pueden resultar ser el mejor fuente sobre el cambio climático que se ha encontrado hasta la fecha.

Además, las alemejas muestran que los antiguos manuscritos islandeses eran bastantes acertados al describir el clima mientras que la mayoría de antiguos cálculos sobre el clima solo muestran  una temperatura mediana, según mbl.is.

Por ejemplo, Landnáma (The Book of Settlement), describe un periodo de frío excepcional, durante el cual la gente se alimentaba de cuervos y zorros y las personas mayores y débiles fueron arrojados desde los acantilados.

El estudio de Patterson sobre almejas confirma que este periodo de frío sí había pasado, cuando la temperatura del océano durante el verano solo llegaba a 5-6ºC (41-43ºF) comparado con 7.5-9.5°C (45.5-49°F) un siglo antes.”

“Más de dos animales y plantas cada año desaparecen en Inglaterra y cientos más están en peligro de extinción, según un informe publicado hoy.

Natural England, la agencia estatal responsable por la campiña, ha dicho que el estudio nacional más importante sobre las amenazas a la biodiversidad ha descubierto que se han extinguido más de 500 especies en Inglaterra, casi todos menos una docena, en los últimos dos siglos.”

Juliette Jowet, correspondent for The Guardian newspaper, reports:

“More than two animals and plants a year are becoming extinct in England and hundreds more are severely threatened, a report published today reveals.

Natural England, the government’s agency responsible for the countryside, said the biggest national study of threats to biodiversity found nearly 500 species that had died out in England, all but a dozen in the last two centuries.”

What is your opinion about these findings? Should something be done or is it Nature’s way of evolution?

El periódico digital, The Times Online, informa que el atún rojo ha sido pescado casi al punto de exterminio y queda poco tiempo para impedir que esta especie desaparecer para siempre.

Al parecer, Europa podría llegar a un acuerdo para prohibir la pesca del atún rojo, pero Joe Borg, el Comisario de Pesca del UE está en contra de la prohibición. Mientras tanto, Cities (La Convención sobre el Comercio Internacional con Especies en Peligro) mantendrá una reunión este marzo para discutir esta prohibición y donde el voto de Europa es crucial para salvar al atún rojo.

Sin embargo, The Times Online informa que esta mañana el debate del atún rojo ya no está en la agenda ‘off the agenda. José Manuel Barroso, the Commission President, doesn’t like arguments…’. (José Manuel Barroso, el Presidente de la Comisión, no le gusta las discusiones…).

Greenpeace ya alertaron de este problema en el 2006:
“La población de atún rojo en el mar Mediterráneo está a punto del colapso y la pesquería debería ser cerrada inmediatamente. Greenpeace reclama a los países mediterráneos la protección del atún rojo mediante la establecimiento de reservas marinas en sus zonas de reproducción y alimentación. Éstas formarían parte de una red global de reservas marinas que cubra el 40% de los océanos que es necesaria para dar a los océanos la oportunidad de recuperarse después de décadas de explotación pesquera a escala industrial.”

The Times Online reports that the bluefin tuna has been fished virtually to extinction and there is only a certain amount of time left to prevent this species from total extinction.

It seems that Europe could agree to ban fishing bluefin but Joe Borg, the EU Fisheries Commissioner is opposing the ban. Meanwhile, Cities (The convention on International Trade in Endangered Species) will meet in March to debate this ban where Europe’s vote is key to saving the bluefin.

However, The Times Online reports this morning that discussion of the bluefin is ‘off the agenda. José Manuel Barroso, the Commission President, doesn’t like arguments…’.

Greenpeace already warned about this back in 2006:
“Greenpeace is calling on the countries of the Mediterranean to protect bluefin tuna with marine reserves in their breeding and feeding areas. They would become part of a global network of marine reserves across 40% of the world’s oceans that are needed to give the oceans a chance to recover from decades of large-scale industrial exploitation.”

The local government of Asturias (Spain) has decided to fine people who need to be rescued if they have been negligent in the mountains. What is your opinion? Should people be fined? What defines negligence in the mountain? What should people know about venturing off into the mountains so as to avoid needing to be rescued?
