Vice-chancellors warn that budget cuts will force universities to freeze places. This may force universities to give priority to foreign students as they can be charged at a much higher rate compared to home students.
University College London explains on their website why foreign students are charged more:
“Tuition fees for Overseas students are higher than for UK/EU students reflecting the fact that UCL receives no money from the UK Government to cover any aspect of the cost of their education. Overseas fees are set by UCL and are subject to revision each year, usually rising in line with inflation. The fee payable depends on the subject being studied.”
However, David Lammy, the Higher Education Minister has stated that these fears about cutbacks are unfounded. Nevertheless, the Government will fine universities £3,700 for every student admitted beyond the maximum limit.
